Project Description
A minor renovation project at Germantown Square Urban Park intends to improve safety, accessibility, and sustainability as well as to enhance and activate the park to better serve the nearby community. The project will remove the existing aging gazebo, relocate gathering and seating areas, and provide accessible walkways and stormwater management.
Background
The park is located at 12289 Middlebrook Road, Germantown, MD at its intersection with Germantown Road and Route 118. The ¾ acre parcel was acquired by M-NCPPC in 1988. The park currently includes walking paths, a gazebo, benches, pergolas, and tables. A prominent semi-circular stone wall is visible from the adjoining streets. The park is bisected by numerous overhead and underground utility lines and wires.
The properties adjoining the park consist primarily of commercial offices and retail enterprises. Seneca Valley High School is located approximately 0.25 miles southeast of the park. Residential uses exist north of Middlebrook Road and east of the park.
Status/Project Update
- The project is being developed in two phases. Initially, in the Fall/Winter 2019, several deteriorating structures such as the gazebo, certain benches, pergolas, etc. were demolished due to ongoing safety concerns. Additionally, several trees located behind the stone wall were removed to improve visibility into the park to enhance safety for the general public.
- The second phase includes improvements to include accessible and widened walkways, new seating areas and tables, benches, etc. Currently Parks staff is coordinating with the Montgomery County Department of Transportation on a possible trail extension through the park. Phase II is on hold while funding is acquired for the trail extension project.
- Phase I has been completed. Construction for Phase II is expected to begin in the latter half of 2025 and take approximately 9 months to complete.
