WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks and the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) announce the publication and start of a 30-day public comment period for the draft Environmental Assessment for the Little Falls Parkway Improvements project.
Comments about the draft Environmental Assessment may be submitted to the National Capital Planning Commission online through July 18, 2024.
The project, initiated by Montgomery Parks, will reconfigure the segment of Little Falls Parkway from Arlington Road to Dorset Avenue from four lanes to two lanes maintaining the existing median dividing the lanes. A new protected shared use path and buffered bicycle lane, as well as other traffic, safety, environmental and connectivity improvements are included. The project was approved by the Montgomery County Council in January 2024.
The purpose of NCPC’s review is to ensure that the project aligns with the requirements of the Capper-Cramton Act. This Act mandates that any development of parkland purchased with Capper-Cramton funds must be consistent with park use and public benefits. These benefits include enhancing safety for park users, improving water quality in streams, enhancing park accessibility, and preserving park resources. The draft Environmental Assessment informs NCPC’s review in accordance with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements for federal actions.
