Project Description
This project will renovate the playground while also providing stormwater management. Indian Spring Terrace Local Park is located at 9717 Lawndale Dr., Silver Spring, MD 20901.
Status/Project Update
The design process is beginning, and a community meeting was held on November 16th, 2023. A recording of the community meeting is available. Additional public comments were collected via an online survey in November and December 2023.

Playground Design Concept
The proposed playground at Indian Spring Terrace Local Park will expand the current play equipment offerings while also preserving the existing shade tree within the playground area. The new playground will include a set of tot swings, a new playhouse for children 2 to 5 years old, and a new play structure – which mimics the shape of a tree – for children 5 to 12 years old. Due to root protection that must occur to preserve the existing tree, equipment installation under the tree was kept to a minimum. The area around and under the existing tree will include a freestanding seesaw, two freestanding spring riders, a ‘Cozy Cocoon’ spinner, and several ‘boulder’ seats for climbing and sitting.
The 5 to 12 play structure – in cool tons of white, blue, green, and gray – is the focal point of the proposed playground. A large, tree-like structure provides numerous climbing, swinging, and traversing activities for children to explore. Users can choose from several possible routes to reach the tower, with varying levels of difficulty along the way. Two slides offer a safe and fun return to ground level, both originating from different heights. The tallest point of the tower provides a 360-degree slide that measures 9′ in height. The 5-12 structure also includes a rope bridge, belt climber, hammock climber, cargo net, mounted musical drum, steering wheel, activity panels, and lookout tower with telescope. Metal shade components, which mimic the leaves on a tree, provide dappled shade to the play areas below.
The 2-5 structure includes a playhouse, slide, and tunnel. The same color palette found on the larger play structure is also used on the playhouse. The structure includes many interactive panels and components to allow for imaginative and active play. The playhouse can be entered through a doorway or by crawling through a tunnel. A slide (or the door) serves as the exit for the playhouse.
