Renovation Updates
During Spring 2017, Montgomery Parks began working on plans to remove the parking lot and other hard surface areas at Olney Square Neighborhood Park located at Gelding Lane . The plan was to improve stormwater runoff and remove outdated material and allow reforestation of the area. The parking lot, located in the southern portion of the 23-acre park south of Gelding Lane, was scheduled for removal in Spring 2017 but has been delayed. Parks Staff began notifying the community on the plans and sought public input and ways to improve the area.
The community was asked to comment on our Open Town Hall Forum with results from the residents indicating a need to improve the park amenities mostly focusing in the play area at Gelding Lane and Bowie Mill . The community was also not in favor of removing the basketball court. Parks staff reviewed the comments and began to improve both play areas. Staff reinforced the play equipment and replaced broken items at both play areas. They also installed new wood chips/surfacing at the smaller play lot, making them both useful and safe again. Upon review and community response, it was decided that it will not remove the basketball court. It will be left in place and will enter into the renovation cycle for repairs. The parking lot will be removed as planned. More work is planned to the area in the future.
